Is the phrase ‘Passed out of college’ correct?

People normally use the words ‘passed out’ to describe the process of graduating from a certain college/school.

For example, “He passed out of college last year.” This would actually be inappropriate as the phrase ‘passed out’ means to ‘faint’ or ‘lose one’s consciousness’. So, it would be correct to say “John passed out as soon as the bullet pierced his chest.”

It would be incorrect to say “John passed out of this college last year” because the words passed out mean something entirely different. Instead, we would just have to say “John graduated from this college last year.”
